education
Chris designed Stephenson Memorial First School in Howdon. At the time (mid 1990’s) this was the first new school the Local Authority had built in 18 years.
Extensive consultations with staff and pupils ensured a child-orientated environment, which includes ten classrooms, a crèche, pre-school learning facilities and a courtyard providing a secure outdoor play area for the nursery children, as well as a garden resource for other pupils.
The class bases are laid out in age progression from reception through to upper juniors, with three separate access points from the playground areas. The new school is located on the old school playing fields while the new playing fields are located on the existing school site.
A car park accommodating 30 vehicles is located adjacent to the main entrance and early years entrance. Pedestrian traffic is carefully segregated from vehicle traffic, and a separate drive and service yard is provided for delivery vehicles.
Recent work has included the refurbishment and minor alterations to two schools in North Tyneside in conjunction with Kier North Tyneside.
